Healthiest State Initiative rewards schools with healthy habits

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) — Iowa’s Healthiest State Initiative is rewarding schools who practice healthy habits.

The CDC says about 1 in 5 children between the ages of 6 to 19 suffers from obesity.

With the Healthiest State Initiative, schools like Pierce Elementary School in Cedar Rapids say it helps people develop healthy habits at an early age.

One of the activities the school does with students is called a “Birthday Choice Word.”

“They like to show off a lot of healthy snacks that they brought in, a lot of the younger kids will show off their snack to their classmate or teacher, they’re pretty proud of what they picked out to bring to class,” Matt Brems, a teacher at Pierce Elementary School said.

Pierce Elementary school is also encouraging their students to be active.

The school has also had walk-a-thon fundraisers to make sure the students keep moving.

Leaders at Pierce Elementary School say they would eventually like to build an outdoor garden to keep teaching students about healthy habits.
