How to Survive a Heart Attack: Workout tips for a healthy heart
Birmingham, Ala. (WIAT) – It’s heart week here on CBS 42. One very important component is your exercise routine.
We stopped by the YMCA and did a heart-healthy workout with personal trainer, Mickal Thomas.
“Based on the guidelines of the American heart association, it’s 40 minutes per day, at least 3-4 times a week,” says Thomas.
The great thing is that you can break up your workouts throughout the day.
“If it’s 10 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes at lunch, 10 minutes after work, and then finding another 10 minutes during the day, you’ve got your 40 minutes a day,” says Thomas.
It’s suggested that if you are getting back into a workout routine following a heart complication, take it slow and then build from there. A great safe and effective workout is the treadmill on a 2.5 incline. If you are comfortable with your workout, you can take the incline up to 3.5 or above.
