Kids learn healthy eating tips
4th graders at La Crescent Elementary learned healthy cooking skills Thursday morning.
Part of a program called Farm 2 School – aimed at getting local foods into school lunch menus – the executive chef from Mayo Clinic Health System dropped by to teach cooking hygiene, chopping skills and showed the kids how to make a tomato basil mozzarella salad.
“People forget many times that vegetables and cheese and fruit can be quick and easy,” said Mayo’s executive chef Heather VanHorn. “It’s just we have to teach our youth to keep that moving forward. It will help us fight obesity [and] it will help us fight diabetes.”
Each month, Farm 2 school features a locally grown ingredient. January’s “Harvest of the Month” vegetable was basil.
