Tips for healthy, glowing skin in Canberra's climate
Whether or not the Canberra climate is agreeable is an opinion left to the observer. Either way, you can protect and nurture your skin all year round for a healthy, glowing complexion. Professional beauty therapist, Lyla Saudi gave her basic tips for cultivating fresh skin.
1. Sun Protection
It is so important that we protect our face and body from the harsh Canberra climate, in particular from the sun. The sun produces harmful UV rays that can cause a variety of skin problems (think the loss of collagen, elastin, age spots etc), and increases the risk of skin cancer. So, it is always important to use sunscreen, wear protective clothing and seek out shaded areas.
2. The Right Skin Care Products
Products need to be chosen based on your skin type, condition, and the environment you are in (think how dry the Canberra winter is compared to summer). Creating a skin care regime using simple steps such as ‘cleansing, toning, exfoliating, and moisturising’ will be the best place to start. And if you really want to give your skin that extra repairing boost it needs, adding a serum containing highly active ingredients, designed to travel deeper into the skin, will be your best friend!
Not only will a healthy diet make you feel good, it will also make your skin look good too. What you eat is just as important as what you put on your skin because they work harmoniously together. Think of cutting down on caffeine and sugar, limit your alcohol intake, and concentrate on adding more fruits and vegetables into your diet.
Your skin is the largest organ of the body and it gets thirsty too! Keeping your skin hydrated by increasing your water intake (try to aim for a minimum of 2 litres per day) will not only make you glow, it will also help to plump up the skin, reduce those fine lines and wrinkles, and flush out those bad toxins.
5. Reduce Stress
Stress is one of the main causes that can trigger a variety of skin problems (from breakouts to rashes). Look for ways to manage stress and encourage healthy skin by getting enough sleep, exercising, meditating, immersing yourself in nature, and taking the time out to do what makes you happy.
For individual or specific skin care, Lyla recommends seeing a beauty therapist that specialises in skin care. They have the extensive education, training, and knowledge to provide you with the best treatments suited specifically for you. With your goals in mind (from pampering to tackling skin concerns), your therapist will create an individualised treatment plan both for a series of professional treatments and recommendation for a home care regime, to get you on the right track to having the best skin you can possibly have.
Lyla works with beauty clients at her Gungahlin-based therapy practice, L.S. Skin Therapies. One of the common myths she hears from clients and other people is that we don’t need sun protection on a cloudy day. Lyla advises that it doesn’t mean that you aren’t at risk. The clouds will filter out the sunlight but not the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that can really damage your skin. Therefore, if you are outside, driving, or sitting next to a window at work, just remember to protect your skin because the worst sunburns can happen when you least expect it.
