Healthy eating during the holidays can be tough but the good news is, founder of Simply Nutrition, Courtney Armstrong and Registered Dietitian AliGray DeLoache, have advice that works.

Healthy eating tips:

  • Remember what the holidays are all about- family, love, thankfulness, etc.
  • Focus on those aspects rather than food
  • Food is just food
  • Don’t skip meals- you may end up overeating later
  • Eat snacks as needed. Keep them balanced
  • Listen to your body
  • Remember your eyes can be bigger than your stomach
  • Assess your fullness before going back for seconds (15 min)
  • Hunger and fullness cues
  • Choose your few favorite foods and enjoy those
  • Skip the ones you don’t love as much
  • Fill up on veggies, protein
  • Don’t restrict sweets
  • Enjoy one occasionally
  • Savor it- pay attention to taste

Exercise

  • Stick with your normal exercise routine
  • Avoid black and white thinking- all or nothing
  • Take a walk with family or a dance party- make it fun

Pumpkin breakfast cookies

  1. 2 c old fashioned oats
  2. 1 c canned pumpkin
  3. ¼ c honey
  4. ¼ c + 1 T peanut butter
  5. ½ c flax seeds
  6. 2 t pumpkin pie spice
  7. Pinch of salt

Combine all ingredients together until smooth. Form into cookies and place on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes.
