Tennessee is experiencing a dental health crisis and is among one of the top states with the worst oral health in the country.

More than half of Tennessee adults have lost six or more teeth due to dental decay or gum disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The concern for proper dental care prompted Drs. H. Daniel Clark, Sean Young, and Brad Lewallen of Southern Oral & Facial Surgery to offer the community a life-changing opportunity called the Smile Again program, providing a deserving individual in the community with a free $50,000 smile makeover.

The recipient will receive a full-arch replacement with the All-on-4 Treatment Concept, a complex procedure that replaces broken, decayed, and missing teeth with a custom-designed dental prosthesis. The All-on-4 Treatment Concept uses four supporting dental implants that attach to the prosthesis that work as fully-functional, permanent, natural-looking teeth. The Smile Again program not only gives the recipient a solution to their poor oral health but will help to restore their self-esteem and confidence as well.

Oral health is a commonly neglected issue and in fact, one out of every three Americans do not brush their teeth at least twice a day as recommended by the American Dental Association. A new study published by the American Heart Association confirmed that poor oral health can be detrimental to a person’s cardiovascular health and is linked to heart attack and stroke. Moreover, the affects that poor oral health can have on a person’s ability to get their dream job and live a happy life is huge.

“The Smile Again program is our way of giving back to the community by offering our help to someone in need of a smile makeover,” Dr. Clark said. “Poor oral health can take a toll on a person’s whole outlook on life and can get in the way of their goals and other opportunities. We are excited to take this life-changing journey with the recipient and provide them with a smile they deserve.”

Southern Oral & Facial Surgery will partner with restorative dentist Dr. Ryan Torti, May Dental Arts, LLC, and Straumann Dental Implant Company to give the recipient a flawless smile.

The application period for the Smile Again program opened October 26 and will run until November 26. The program is offered to individuals in the Franklin, Thompson’s Station, and surrounding areas.

Applications will be accepted through November 26. They should be submitted along with the applicant’s personal story about why they should be chosen as this year’s Smile Again recipient. Also required is a digital photo of the current state of the applicant’s teeth and smile.
